The Sangat Advice Centre was established in 1997. They aim to support members of the Asian community and other minority communities living in Harrow and neighbouring boroughs, in particular through ensuring that they have information about their rights and through advocacy. They work in particular with people with little knowledge of English, vulnerable people, disabled people and those with mental health issues. Their areas of expertise include welfare benefits, housing, debt, discrimination, immigration and appeals (they can represent clients at tribunals). If they cannot assist a client or provide a particular service needed, they will either signpost or refer the case to an appropriate agency. They work closely with the statutory services, Housing Associations, Benefit Agency, and a number of voluntary organisations. Finally, they provide outreach support to carers from black, ethnic minority and refugee communities, as well as advice and advocacy to help prevent homelessness.
